Beekeeping for Beginners: The Bees Knees

COURSE DESCRIPTION
Welcome to the fascinating hobby of beekeeping. This class will cover the benefits and how-tos of keeping bees. Get started or get a refresher on everything from honey bee biology and behavior to how to acquire your first bees and where to place your hive. We’ll discuss equipment, how to conduct inspections, seasonal management of your colonies, and being a good neighbor.

Beginning Beekeeping

COURSE DESCRIPTION
Welcome bees to your yard and harvest their honey! Join an experienced local beekeeper to learn the fundamentals of basic backyard beekeeping. You’ll learn all about setting up a hive, acquiring and installing bees, managing them throughout the seasons, harvesting their products, and finding the best local bee supply dealers for required equipment. After the seven classroom sessions, we’ll all attend a hive opening with live bees later in the spring (date to be determined by the instructor).

Beekeeping

COURSE DESCRIPTION This course, designed to interest not only seasoned beekeepers but those individuals interested in starting this fascinating hobby.  You will learn the latest techniques of helping beehives survive mites, disease, and a Middlesex County winter.  You will also learn about beekeeping equipment, hive management, buying and installing bees into a hive, where to place a hive, and harvesting honey, pollen, propolis and beeswax.   There are five classroom sessions and a sixth class to be held in the field (time and date – TBD) and we will open an overwintered hive.  Your registration fee includes a text on beekeeping, “The Backyard Beekeeper,” by Kim Flottum.
